Going Overboard with Traffic Lights

Bowen to Jervois in WellingtonI’ve been a little bemused by the installation of many new traffic lights on Jervois Quay in Wellington recently.  They totally remind me of the laser gates in The Phantom Menace where Darth Maul is being chased by Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan.

Between Bowen Street and Frank Kitts Park (approx. 1km) there would be around 8 sets of lights - with at least one more set to go in.  This seemed a little OTT to me as the numbers of pedestrians were never all that high.  So I did a little digging around and it looks as though WCC has a target to make the waterfront as accessible as town is now.  They show examples of other international cities to prove their point too.

Here’s the plan if you feel like taking a look: http://www.wellington.govt.nz/services/urban/pdfs/gehl13.pdf

Ok, so the light is now on in my head, and I get it; doesn’t stop the annoyance of adding yet another 5mins to my trip into work; maybe I should start biking - now there’s a novel idea :)
